Alkalise or Die is certainly an eye catching title for a book don’t you think! This is the title of Theodore Baroody’s book that covers the science behind the theory of alkalising for preventing disease and improving health.
Alkalising the system has become one of the cornerstones of my treatment with almost every client these days, with very good reason.
An acidic body will hold on to excess weight, toxins and heavy metals. An acidic system is prone to inflammation and an acidic gut is a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and parasites.
Your Body’s pH affects EVERYTHING!
The pH balance in our body is crucial for all biochemical reactions, intracellular activity and electrical (life) energy processes. When the pH is out of balance it can negatively affect the body’s functioning at a basic level, causing a wide range of symptoms to occur.
What is pH?
The acronym pH stands for ‘Potential Hydrogen’. By definition, it is the degree of concentration of hydrogen ions in a substance or solution. It is measured on a scale from 0 to 14. Higher numbers means a substance is more alkaline and has greater potential for absorbing hydrogen ions. Lower numbers indicate more acidity with less potential for absorbing hydrogen ions. Distilled water is neutral with a pH of 7.
The higher (more alkaline) the pH of a substance or solution, the more electrical resistance that substance holds. Therefore, electricity travels slower with higher pH. If we say something has an acid pH, we are saying it has the qualities of being hot and fast. Alkaline pH, in comparison has qualities of being slow and cool.
The pH Equation and Health
The human body strives to maintain a blood pH of around 7.3.
According to many health researchers, total healing of chronic illness takes place only when and if the blood is restored to a normal, (slightly alkaline) pH.
This is incredibly powerful knowledge for someone who is fighting a disease, overcoming an illness, or just desiring to feel better. The single most effective way of controlling pH is via what we choose to put into our bodies. Our diet, the food and drinks we consume, directly affect the pH level and therefore control our metabolic function.
I find that the majority of people these days exist in an overly acidic state due to what they are eating and drinking regularly, combined with emotional stress and toxic overload from diet and/ or environment. This is why it’s one of the first things I address in treatment. Getting the balance right will vastly improve the body’s chances of healing.
What causes excess acidity in the body?
The number one cause of an acidic body is a diet that is deplete in minerals from nutrient dense vegetables and wholefoods and instead laden with processed food. A diet that is high in carbohydrates (particularly white, refined carbohydrates), high in sugar, both natural and artificial sweeteners will put a huge amount of stress on the system and throw off the pH balance.
Coffee and alcoholic beverages also result in an increase in acidity within the body and often these are consumed coupled with the other major acid causing factor STRESS.
Bodies are clever and are always trying to get back to a neutral healthy balance. This is called homeostasis. When the body is struggling with the excess acid from diet and lifestyle, it tries to buffer the acid with minerals that are ‘borrowed’ from organs and bones in an effort to safely remove acid and prevent long term damage.
Obviously this is not ideal and leaves the body deplete of the minerals it requires for healthy functioning, growth, repair and a wide range of other functions. The other thing that happens is that the body decides to put the excessive acid ‘safely’ into fat cells, making it even more difficult for people who are trying to lose weight.
Solutions for alkalising the body
I hope by now you understand that alkalising the body is extremely important for improving mineral availability and utilisation in the tissues, decreasing chemical stress within the system, improving weight control and enhancing healing and repair on all levels.
The simple solution is a diet rich in green leafy vegetables and clean water as well as reducing strong acid forming foods such as sugar products and refined grains.

- Adding green smoothies to your diet
- Using organic apple cider vinegar in water, once daily
- Pink Himalayan crystal salt on your food
- Lemon juice in water
The lemon juice and apple cider vinegar may be combined in room temperature or warm water and taken as a morning elixir.
Other tricks include the use of mineral compounds, the occasional use of ¼ bicarb soda in water; however the dietary choices above are easy and natural regulators/balancers of pH.
